Table Tennis Tournament

February 1st saw the 5th Bishop Auckland Bribar 2star national table tennis tournament take place at Bishop Barrington. Over 60 players took place with players having to be turned away due to demand. The event which sees competitors take part in under 11, Under 13’s under 15 and under 18 events with a separate practice hall, live tweeting and free to download photos from the day.  The event saw players from Hull, Grantham, Leeds and even players from Scotland as well as a big local entry from Bishop Auckland Table Tennis Club.

The Day started with a Bang for Bishop Auckland TTC. Leo Pontone reached the semi-finals of the under 11’s and Luke Mitchell and Joe Sparke reached the u11 plate final ensuring early silver wear for the club. Luke came out as winner. Anya Milne was not to be outdone and also won the under 11 Girls plate event.

Leo who is part of the elite sports academy at Barrington continued his form and along with Peter Smallcombe reach the quarter finals of the u13’s and Emma Smith reached the Semi Final of the girl’s u13 Plate event.

Emma also reached the quarter finals of the under girls’ plate in the under 15s.  Luca Pontone, Jack Jacomb, Peter Smallcombe and, in his first national event, Lee Tinkler all reached the last 16 of the Under 15 boys event with 4 further Bishop Auckland players make the later stages of the under 15’s plate events.  Conor Elston reached the quarter finals and Max Duffin won the event beating club mate Sam Hume in the final.

The under 18s saw Dan Collinson and Harry Atkinson reach the last 16 of the plate event with all 4 of the semi-finalists being Bishop Players with Conor Elston and Matt Oldfield losing out. The final was Between Joe Hume and Jack Jacomb (another elite academy member) with Joe Hume coming out winner in 4 ends.

The main event saw Sam Hume and Max Duffin bow out in the last 16 with 5th seed Zak Hutchinson reaching the quarter finals along with Tom Whittaker and Carl Draper. 3rd seed Rob Renton went one stage further before losing to the eventual winner. Erin Harrison saved the biggest win until the end of the day by winning the Junior Girls title.
