Bishop Barrington PE department are thrilled that they have been successful in the Wear Valley Sports Awards, winning the Secondary School contribution to PE and school sport for the Durham dales area. The award is testament to the hard work all members of the department have put into PE within the school but also the in the wider community.
Many things contributed to winning the award; teaching across the department was judged to be ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted in 2013, the extensive out of hours school learning programme which involves 70% of pupils, and includes regional and national competitions. The PE department also work closely with feeder primary schools, running CPD programmes to ‘up skill the teacher’ to help improve the teaching and learning of PE. Bishop Barrington is also the base for many community clubs including ‘High Voltage Trampolining club’, Bishop Auckland Table Tennis Club, Durham Wildcats Basketball Satellite Club and Bishop Auckland Netball club. The department works closely with these clubs to maintain high levels of participation from the school and community.
We are a Youth Sport Trust Gold Partner school and employ a YST development officer for 2 days a week. Most recently, selected members of the department have set up the only Elite Sports Academy within Durham. This focusses on developing young talented sports men and women from across the area (over 65% of the pupils on the academy do not come from Bishop Barrington school) and leading them through the Junior Athlete Education programme.
