Assessment
There are two tiers of entry for GCSE examinations:
- Foundation tier pupils can achieve grades C-G.
- Higher tier pupils can achieve grades A*-D.
Assessment is by three methods:
- Module tests taken at the end of each module in Year 10. These tests are worth 30% of the final mark.
- Coursework - assessed practical activities worth 20% of the final mark.
- Two written paper examinations (dual award) taken at the end of year 11. These two papers are worth 50% of the final mark, or:
- One written paper examination (single award) taken at the end of Year 11. This paper is worth 50% of the final mark.
Revision Materials and Workshops
During the two GCSE years, the Science department offers all students the opportunity to take part in revision sessions both during and after school. In Year 11 students will receive an extra lesson after school per week in the run-up to the exams.
Revision guides will be available to buy from the Science department at a discounted price of £2.50. They are available for both Higher and Foundation levels. We fully recommend these guides to all students.
Why Science?
The course will provide an excellent science education through a variety of teaching and learning styles, including well designed studies of exploratory and investigative sciences. Dual Award Science is a requirement for many further and higher education courses.
