Mathematics

Aims of the Department

The objective of our department is to help each individual student achieve his/her full potential in this core curriculum subject. We use a wide ranging variety of classroom teaching styles, resources, interactive ICT, texts, revision aids, mathematical visits and national team and individual challenges to help us fully develop this potential.

We implement a positive homework ethos and have high expectation of each student's progress in his/her time with us. The individual student is tracked consistently so that this expected progression is made in the necessary time span, with an indication of particular talent or where extra help is needed highlighted at an early stage. Students are expected to use their own scientific calculator and other necessary mathematics equipment.

Key Stage 3

We are currently introducing the Nelson Thornes STP text to enable the most able students to achieve the highest levels of success in the Key Stage 3 National Strategy and SATs. We also use the concise Key Maths course and a nationally recognised intervention strategy which helps those students needing more time to develop their mathematics skills. Use of the interactive whiteboard (in all maths classrooms), "Maths Alive", with regular and varied homework tasks, leads to a creative and developmental working environment and eventually national SAT success for each student.

Key Stage 4

We use the Collins "Brian Speed" text as a basis for G.C.S.E. maths at 3 tiers of entry. Each student takes a linear course which involves the completion of 2 pieces of coursework and 2 final examinations leading to a grade A*-G. As in K.S.3. the individual pupil is tracked so that progress is monitored regularly and individual talents are areas for improvement are highlighted early. Each student is expected to complete at least 2 homework tasks each week and we strive to make these tasks absolutely relevant to the student's needs and progress in their G.C.S.E. course. Revision guides, booster classes and master classes are made available to Year 11.
