Our aim at Bishop Barrington is to provide all pupils in our care with a desire and clear path to achieve academic success.

We strive to reach our aim by creating a climate of high quality teaching, firm but fair discipline, below average class sizes and a caring pastoral system.

History

Key Stage 3

This is a summary of topics that the department cover in Key Stage 3, from years 7 until 9.

Year 7

  • History Mystery - What happened to the Tollund Man?
  • Medieval Realms - 'Struggles for power'
  • The Native Peoples of North America

Year 8

  • The Making of the United Kingdom - The Reign of Elizabeth I
  • The Making of the United Kingdom - The English Civil Wars
  • The French Revolution

Year 9

  • Britain 1750 - 1900 - Industrial and Agricultural Revolution
  • The Twentieth Century World - Rise of the Dictators
  • The Twentieth Century World - The Holocaust
  • The Twentieth Century World - Hot War, Cold War
  • The Twentieth Century World - America in the "Roaring Twenties"

Key Stage 4

At GCSE level, we offer OCR Modern World History which comprises of the following:

  • Two coursework assignments on the First World War (completed in Year 10)
  • The Peace Treaties
  • The League of Nations
  • Causes of the Second World War
  • A depth study on Germany 1918-45
  • Britain 1905-1918

At present, we also offer an extra option class for Histroy which takes place at lunchtimes and after school.

Masterclasses

Several Year 10 students are currently taking part in History masterclasses organised by Teeside University and funded by the Aim Higher scheme. The classes take place at St. John's Comprehensive School and are an excellent oppertunity for the students.

ICT Resources

The department has purchases software to support learning in the Britain 1750-1900 unit and Making of the United Kingdom. These resources are accessible to whole classes in the ICT rooms and also from home using our Easylink system.
