His Royal Highness, The Duke of Kent, is to visit our school on Wednesday, November 21, to officially open the new £1.6 million Sports Hall.

During his visit, he will see students taking part in a variety of sporting activities. A display of short tennis will, no doubt, be of particular interest to the Duke, who has been President of the All England Tennis Club at Wimbledon, since 1969.

On arrival at Bishop Barrington, he will be formally welcomed by Head Teacher, Bruce Guthrie, civic leaders, dignitaries, and the school's Head Boy and Head Girl, Anthony Elgy, and Samantha Robson. The Duke will then be introduced to Ben Johnson, Director of Specialism, who, together with Mr Guthrie, will show His Royal Highness around the Sports Hall and introduce each activity.

The Duke will first watch a dance lesson in the dance studio, followed by demonstrations of table tennis, self defence, trampolining and short tennis in the sports hall, where he will be introduced to sports staff and students. Before leaving the sports hall, he will unveil a commemorative plaque. He will then be taken on a short tour of the rest of the school.

Head Teacher, Bruce Guthrie, said:

We are delighted His Royal Highness, The Duke of Kent, has kindly agreed to visit our school and officially open the Sports Hall. We are looking forward to his visit on Wednesday, November 21. I am sure it will be a most memorable day. We are very proud of our Sports Hall. It is a wonderful asset to the school and the community.

Ben Johnson, Director of Specialism (Sport), said:

The Sports Hall has had a massive impact on the pupils and the local community of Bishop Barrington, and continues to do so. It is a fantastic facility that has allowed us to deliver high quality PE and School Sport.

The Sports Hall has become integral to our development as a Specialist Sports College and is enabling us to host some high profile sporting events and also support the School Sport Partnership, which is based in our school. We are attracting more and more pupils to the school because of our status and our facilities. To complement our excellent Sports Hall, we are in the process of developing a new tennis area, to include four floodlit outdoor tennis courts.

Specialist college status has resulted in the school being able to provide a wider range of extra-curricular activities and participation rates in sport are increasing dramatically.

Currently more than 30 community groups and clubs are using the facilities, out of school hours, and it is already having a major impact on sports provision locally.

The programme of weekly activities includes netball, badminton, taekwondo, pilates, boxercise, circuit training, gymnastics, basketball and football. The hall is also used for winter cricket training.

The sports hall and dance studio are available for weekend bookings, at present the sports hall costs £25 per hour to hire and the dance studio, £15 per hour.
