A mini-Olympics festival for local primary school children, on Friday, February 1st, was one of the highlights of a Polish international exchange visit hosted by our school.
Ben Johnson, Director of Specialism (Sport) at Bishop Barrington, said:
The Dreams and Teams International Leadership Programme has brought together eight y10 students from Bishop Barrington with eight students from a sixth form school in Malbork, Northern Poland.
"The students organised a mini Olympics festival for 60 primary school students from St Anne's primary school. The festival was a huge success and all the pupils demonstrated excellent leadership skills in organising and running the festival. The Polish students were here for five days and experienced life and culture in Newcastle, Durham, Bishop Auckland and Harrogate. Our return trip to Malbork takes place on the 21st - 25th 2008, when our students will be delivering a festival of sport to young Polish students."
Mrs Beth Atkinson, Head Teacher of St Anne's Primary School, said the children really enjoyed taking part in the festival. "The event was brilliantly organised by the students. The facilities here are wonderful."
The youngsters, from years 4 and 5, took part in eight activities including a shuttle run, obstacle shuttle run, in which participants had to go through two hula hoops and two small hurdles; target throw - throwing bean bags into three hoops; standing long jump, standing triple jump, speed bounce, netball/basketball shooting contest and standing high jump.
Each event was supervised by a Bishop Barrington and a Polish student. At the end of the festival, the names of the pupils scoring the highest points, in each event, were announced. Certificates were awarded to the winners.
The Polish students and two members of staff, Agnieszka Jastrzebska and Michael Krotowski, said they had greatly enjoyed their visit. They said how lucky we are to have such wonderful facilities at Bishop Barrington.
The eight year 10 Bishop Barrington students, who are doing sports leadership as part of their BTEC sports studies, and two members of staff, Mr Johnson, and Terry Lawton, are to visit Poland in April.
Mr Johnson said: "Our return trip to Malbork takes place from April 21-25
when our students will be delivering a festival of sport to young Polish students."
The Dreams and Teams programme aims to develop mutual understanding between countries, around the use of sport, in helping to develop education. The programme also develops leadership skills and cross cultural awareness, in 14 to 18-year-olds, through sport and international educational links.
