Bishop Barrington School enjoyed a spectacularly successful year in 2008. 82% of students gained at least 5+ A* - C grades in their GCSE examinations. What was also particularly pleasing was that 60 % of these students also passed with an A* - C grade in Maths and English. This is the Government's own preferred criteria for judging success.
But it was not just the sheer volume of passes that we celebrated, it was the quality of those passes too. The overall pass rate at A* and A grades increased yet again this year. 36% of pupils attained at least 3 A*-A grades, and this clearly points to a very high level of achievement.
This position was not just confined to a small number of students as can be seen from the fact that 51% of all students were awarded at least 1 A*-A grade. Overall, students gained 126 A* grades and 186 A grades. One subject did particularly well. In History, the school came top in the County for their pass rate but, it was very pleasing to see that 66% of their students gained an A* or A grade.
Our success can also be tracked in county and national terms. Because of our results, we are proud to have reached the 4th top position in Durham County this year. Also, every year the Government assesses each school's "Contextual Value Added" score. This measures pupil progress from Key Stage 2 through to Key Stage 4. Because of our results we have established ourselves in the top 5% of schools nationally.
However, we are not complacent. We think that we know what we have to do to get wonderful results. And to be very clear, we need to have a three way partnership. Teachers know how to play their part, and continually seek to improve their subjects to meet new demands. Also, because we care for students on an individual basis, our pupils are always made aware of their targets and their potential and they are actively encouraged to meet these.
But the third aspect of the partnership is parents and carers. We value, very highly, our close working relationship with parents and carers. Their role in motivating students alongside teachers is pivotal. So it is that when we all work together, then success is never far away.
