School has Zulu Day

Bishop Barrington Sports with Mathematics College were proud to host a Zulu day for local Primary schools.
Over two hundred and fifty pupils from feeder schools in the Bishop Auckland area, attended a day of singing, dancing, art, culture and language workshops held by the Lions of Zululand, who are part of the largest ethnic group in South Africa on Friday, 17th July.
Lions of Zululand is a group of fifteen dedicated cultural athletes stemmed from the initiatives and leadership of Mduduzi Mkize of KwaMashu Township, South Africa. The group of fifteen strive for excellence and aim to promote the traditional cultural and artistic heritage of Africa. More importantly, the group aim to bridge the gap of the Institution of Cultural and Heritage memory through arts.
Pupils were also lucky enough to sample authentic singing and dance performances from the Lions of Zululand, who performed in full traditional Zulu costume.
Bishop Barrington were pleased to host the event as it offered an international cultural awareness for the pupils involved and also invited members of the local community into the school.
The pupils involved found the day exciting and interesting, one pupil saying:
It felt brilliant to know about and take part in Zulu culture.
