School has Charity Day
Thursday 16 July 2009
Students at Bishop Barrington Sports with Mathematics College are preparing for a Charity Day.
Students will be taking part and watching a charity concert, as well as donating money for wearing non-school uniform on the last day of term.
The concert will take place on Wednesday, where pupils and staff can pay to see the many talents at their school. All money raised will be donated to the Butterwick Hospice.
The whole event has been organised by Lisa Bain, head of Music at the school, who holds the work of the Butterwick Hospice close to her heart.
“Having lost a number of family members to cancer, I feel this is such a worth while cause.”
The Butterwick Hospice offers free compassionate care for adults and children with terminal illnesses, as well as their loved ones. The Hospice hold a number of fund raising events and Bishop Barrington Sports with Mathematics College are taking this opportunity to help the charity that gives so much to people in need of care.
Lisa took a number of pupils to the Butterwick Hospice in December to entertain residents, staff and friends with live music.
“The residents enjoyed the music and were dancing – it felt great for the pupils to give something back.”
The concert gives Bishop Barrington Sports with Mathematics College pupils the opportunity to showcase their many talents. The set list ranges a variety of acts such as a Dance Troop, Solo singers, the school’s choir, piano, violin and cornet performances, as well as a DJ group.
The show will open with the school’s very own samba band, who will perform a reggae number. The band consists of over twenty pupils and is becoming very popular within the school.
Pupils will be performing music from a number of genres such as classical, musical and pop numbers. Some pupils will even be performing their own original pieces.
Year 10 pupil Kimberley Stephenson from Bishop Auckland, is excited to be a part of such a worthy event.
“This concert gives us the opportunity to appreciate the hard work that goes on at the Butterwick Hospice. Knowing we have made a difference really makes us feel proud.”
Furthermore, pupils will also be paying £1 to wear non-school uniform. The money raised will be donated to an African Charity Event taking place later in the year.
