Rowing Challenge

Friday 6 March 2009

Twenty Year 8 and Year 9 students attempted to row 460 miles – the combined lengths of the River Severn, the longest river in England, and the River Shannon, the longest river in Ireland.

But they didn’t need to brave the open water. The sponsored row took place dance studio after school last Friday. February 27. The students managed to complete 75,053 metres (46.6 miles) in two hours rowing on four Concept2 indoor rowing machines.

The event was to raise funds to enable the students to take part in a World Challenge event in May in the Peak District. During the week’s residential visit, they will take part in a variety of outdoor activities, including kayaking, abseiling and two nights camping. To date, they have raised £1,940 towards the costs of the trip.

Ben Johnson, Director of Sport and Assistant Head Teacher, said: “They worked really, really hard. I was very impressed with their attitude; they were very positive and supportive of each other. The atmosphere was excellent. I would like to thank the students for all their hard work, their parents for their support and all who sponsored them.”

The girls take a turn at the “oars”.

Rowing with a smile.
