A Learning Journey

Friday 15 September 2006

The making of the professional video film entitled, A Learning Journey: Bishop Barrington Where Every Child Matters and Every Child Achieves, came about through our Further Education links with the University of Teesside.

Our students were filmed taking part in a variety of school activities and two of our students have been involved in the filming and production.

On July 14, Mr Vin Arthey, principal lecturer and programme leader for media production, and professional cameraman, Dominic “Dom” Dunn, visited the school to film aspects of school life. The day’s filming resulted in two videos. They returned to school on August 24th to capture the scenes when students received their GCSE exam results.

Two Year 10 students, Stephen Penn and Stacey Dixon, who had expressed a keen interest in the project, have been actively involved in the project throughout. Under the expert guidance of Mr Arthey and Dom, they took turns behind the camera and helped with the sound recording.

During the shoot in July, students were filmed taking part in a variety of school activities including:

  • Enjoying pasta in the Bistro
  • Gymnastics and cricket nets in the new Sports Hall
  • Discussing new photographic display boards
  • Performing the witches’ scene from Macbeth
  • A group of Year 7 and Year 10 art students discussing their favourite artists

Stacey and Stephen thoroughly enjoyed the film-making experience.

“I have really enjoyed it, I found it very interesting,” said Stephen.
Stacey commented: “I would like to work for a magazine but after today I am also quite interested in working in film.”

They are looking forward to September 20 and 21 when they will travel to the University of Teesside School of Arts & Media, where they will help edit the film in a professional editing suite. About three hours of video film will have to be cut to just five minutes.

“We are also having music specially composed for us by a student at the University. The music will be dubbed on and the commentary, which Stacey is to provide,” said Mrs Jackie Gent, Deputy Head Curriculum.

She added: “It is very important we value our links with Further Education. Our work with Teesside University gives the students a higher asp rational target.”

Our promotional film will be “premiered” in school on October 11 when it will be screened at our Year 6 Open Night. DVD copies of the film will be given to parents, together with the school Prospectus and other promotional material. Copies will also be available, on request, from the school.
