Sports Double

Monday 22 October 2007

Congratulations to student Chris Jackson, who was named Best Male Student of the Week at the Year 10 Aim Higher County Gifted and Talented Sports summer school 2007.

It is the second year running a Bishop Barrington student has received the award, a remarkable double for the school. Last year the accolade went to Stephen Roe. The award takes into account a range of abilities, including leadership skills, performance and development.

Chris, together with other gifted and talented youngsters, has been invited to attend an Aim Higher celebration on Thursday, November 1, which was originally due to have taken place at Durham University on October 6.

Chris, who is now in year 11, said he was delighted to win the award. “I really enjoyed the camp and taking part in the activities. I didn’t expect to win the award.”

He impressed organisers with his leadership skills. “I am not very good at playing sport but I am a good leader, I enjoy teaching others,” said Chris.

During the course of the week, held shortly before the end of the summer term, Chris took part in a variety of activities including a team-building exercise to build a shelter, orienteering, sports leadership, canoeing, and mountain biking in Hamsterley Forest

PE teacher Linda Johnson said: “We are delighted a student from our school has received the Best Male Student award for the second year running. Chris did really well. He has a talent for leadership.”

Chris is the process of completing his basketball level 1 coaching award and would like to become involved in teaching basketball to year 7 and 8 students.

Three other Bishop Barrington students, Josh Ridley, Sammy-Jo Wymer and Samantha Robson, also took part in the sports camp.
