Close Encounters of a Creepy Kind

Thursday 26 July 2007

Our Year7 students came face to face with exotic animals, including giant creepy crawlies and a Royal python snake on Friday, July 6.

The hands-on workshops were conducted by Elaine Burridge, a professional animal ranger with ZooLab UK. She brought with her a variety of animals, including two young rats, cockroaches, a tarantula spider, giant millipede, giant African land snail and a three-year-old Royal python, called Frank, so named because he had blue eyes when young.

She talked about the classification of species, their characteristics, and to which category they belong, such as mammals, invertebrates, vertebrates, molluscs and arthropods.

The workshops, conducted in schools throughout the country by ZooLab, complement various elements of the science curriculum.

The students found the workshops fun and informative, though some youngsters were braver than others when it came to handling the exotic animals.
