Maths Whizzes
Thursday 15 February 2007
The 23 children were nominated, by their respective primary schools, to take part in the special numeracy week, for the more able and talented. They worked on their maths with staff from Bishop Barrington’s mathematics’ department and students.
The children sampled different aspects of the maths department. Activities included a maths relay game, number puzzles, games and using Smarties to plot graphs.
A presentation was held at the end of the week, on Friday, February 9th. Each participant received a certificate and prizes of geometry sets and gift vouchers were awarded to the highest scoring team and individual students.
Commenting on the week, Mr Les Watts, Gifted and Talented Co-ordinator, for the Bishop Auckland Excellence Cluster, said: “It has been really great, a really positive week.”
Phillip Beighton, Assistant Curriculum Leader for Mathematics, said: “The children and staff enjoyed taking part. It has been really good.”
Bishop Barrington also hosted the event last year. Primary schools taking part included: St Helen Auckland, Coundon, St Joseph’s, Prince Bishop, St Wilfrid’s, and St Andrew’s.
