Off to a Winning Start!

Monday 29 September 2014

Two gifted sportswomen got off to a winning start as members of Bishop Barrington’s Elite Sports Academy.  Anna Wright, age 13 (far right) won the regional, all round North of England Level 5 senior gymnastics competition at South Durham Gymnastics Club, in September.  Ellie Barker, age 11, won the International 39kg belt for Muay Thai recently in Crewe.  Ellie has won numerous belts and fights through Auckland Martial Arts Academy and was the WKA British Champion in 2013. She is ranked number 1 in the country.

They are both members of the Elite Sports Academy based at Bishop Barrington School.  This unique support programme offers students a bespoke package of workshops, training and resources.  All the athletes, from seven different primary and secondary schools across Durham, receive the Junior Athlete Education Programme, delivered by the Youth Sport Trust and their Elite Sports Mentors.  Director of the Elite Sports Academy Ben Johnson said, “I am so pleased for both girls.  They are hardworking and really love their sports.  They have been a part of our Elite Sports Academy since July 2014 and I have worked with them on their mental preparation for competitions, their teachability and will to win.  I am confident we will have plenty more success stories for our Elite Athletes”.
