Retelling with rap

Thursday 13 May 2010

A group of Bishop Barrington students are working hard to bring a modern dance interpretation to the Cain and Abel biblical story of murder, brotherly betrayal and sacrifice. Set within a Hip-Hop culture, the sons do battle as they fight for approval and love. The production by Ellen and Fred Phethean uses art forms including rap, street poetry, dance and graffiti.

Bishop Barrington School has had a long track record of encouraging interest in dance both within the curriculum and in after school clubs. The girls are quite used to experimenting with dance, acting and rap.

The presentation, which is part of the Durham Mysteries 2010 programme will take place at The Sands at the end of May. The girls are currently rehearsing at Northumbria University, and director Fiona MacPherson said of the girls, “It's been a privilege and a pleasure to work with such talented young people in the North East, helping them develop these performance skills has been great fun.”
