Pumpkin Portraits

Friday 24 November 2006

Students used their artistic talents to create pumpkin portraits of their teachers to raise funds for the BBC’s Children in Need Appeal.

ASDA supermarket in Bishop Auckland donated more than 100 pumpkins, left over from Halloween.

Working in pairs, Year 8 art students created their masterpieces (there were also some mistresses) by carving out the pumpkins and then sticking on various materials.

The fruits of their labours were put on display for staff and students to view. Karen Summerson, Service Manager at ASDA in Bishop Auckland, kindly judged the pumpkin portraits and awarded first prize to Shannon Sutton and Sophie Brown, for their portrait of Caroline Wearmouth, Head of Modern Foreign Languages.

The school also held a non-uniform day on Friday, November 17, to raise funds. Students sold fairy cakes and biscuits, which they had made in food technology with the help of food technology teacher, Sarah Robinson, and teaching assistant Stephanie Ridley; and kitchen staff organised a guess the weight of the cookie competition. By lunchtime, a total of more than £700 had been raised with more to come in.
