Art & Design

Providing a creative outlet for pupils is vital to an inclusive education. The Art Department is crucial to encourage creativity and the use of thinking skills that can help pupils to develop confidence and their ability to communicate with others. The Art Department provides two rooms full of inspiration and displays of pupils work. Teachers try to promote a creative atmosphere where pupils feel confident to explore their own ideas. Independent learning and use of initiative is vital to the work pupils will produce.

Key Stage Three

During KS3 pupils explore a wide variety of media and skills to prepare them for the requirements of KS4. Projects are specifically targeted at pupils to help them progress through the National Curriculum levels. Creativity and the use of research has become increasingly important as pupils complete artwork based on cultural aspects, ‘Manga’ and ‘The Day of the Dead’, famous artists such as Picasso and Van Gogh and more contemporary figures like Jon Burgerman. Work includes both 2D and 3D elements with extensive use of ICT and cross curricular links.

Key Stage Four

It is a period of transition for Key Stage Four pupils. As the current Applied Art GCSE comes to an end the department is switching to the BTEC Diploma. Offering the equivalent of four GCSEs the course allows pupils to experiment within a wide variety of media and also study the way artists, craftspeople and designers work in the outside world.

We are also excited to be part of the new Creative & Media Diploma. An engaging new course the diploma offers the chance for particularly talented pupils to explore a selection of ways of working in the creative industries. Tying together aspects of Art & Design, Drama, Dance and Media Studies this exciting new course is being ran in conjunction with several other local schools.
